Wednesday Dec 19 – last night/ gift stealing night

In keeping with club tradition, our last night of fencing for the year is a gift stealing night.

Come one, come all – even if you haven’t fenced recently, or are from another fencing club, you are invited!

How does it work? Each fencer brings a wrapped gift with secret contents. It can be purchased (value ~$5-$10) found around the house (hello, scented candle mom will never miss!) or home made (cookies are great! (no nuts please!)). Fencing continues as normal, except at the start of each bout the fencers place their wrapped gift by the score box. At the end the bout, the winner decides which gift they leave with. This continues all evening with gifts swapping hands with each bout until we break to open the gifts.

Note: you will want to plan to stay until at last 9:45 to enjoy this event

Next beginner class

Our next beginner class is starting January 9. Have a friend who would love fencing? Help us spread the word!

The class runs Wednesdays, 7:30 – 8:45 for 8 weeks

Once the 8 weeks formal instruction portion is complete the course fee includes joining Monday and Wednesday club practice for March.

The cost is $60, equipment included. Best deal in town!

Pre-registration is required and space is limited. Email cap.city.fencing@gmail.com to reserve a spot (or with any questions).

Registration open for 2019 Escrime Sundae Tournament

Registration now open for our annual ice-cream filled fencing tournament, Escrime Sundae! We will have sanctioned events for seniors and youth in all weapons, and an unsanctioned beginners foil event. Sanctioned events require a CFF license. Early registration is helpful to the club (for organizational and promotional purposes) so please do register early!

New CCFC Board of Directors and other AGM news

We had our Annual General Meeting on December 10.

We elected the following directors to the CCFC Board: Robert Smith, Stacy Chappel, Trevor Morrison, Isaac Carter-Hughes, Joseph Barss.

Thanks to Orion and Felix for their work on the board last year.

We also approved the addition of a $50 fuel reimbursement for volunteer drivers taking carpools of youth to out of town tournaments.

December 2 skills workshop for the win

A big thanks to Miko and Orion for an excellent advanced skills workshop on December 2. Here’s an action shot of participants learning to change pace and direction:

We had ten students from CCFC, Saanich Rec and UVIC for a morning session that workshop included footwork drills, technical exercises, practice on the piste and one-on-one lessons. I’ve since witnessed some exciting fleche action during practice!
